Cold chain

Cold chain logistics: what you need to know before shipping temperature-sensitive cargo

Summary: A broken cold chain doesn't show up as a line item, it shows up as spoiled cargo at destination. Here's what actually protects a temperature-sensitive shipment from origin to delivery.

1. What counts as cold chain cargo

Perishable food and beverage are the obvious case, but pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, certain electronics and chemicals all carry temperature requirements too, and the tolerance for error is often tighter than people expect.

2. Where cold chains actually break

Not usually in transit, at the handoffs. A reefer container sitting on a dock waiting for a customs hold, a truck idling at a border crossing, a warehouse dock without proper cold storage, that's where temperature excursions happen.

3. Reefer containers vs. insulated/refrigerated trucking

  • Reefer containers: active refrigeration, precise temperature control, standard for ocean cold chain.
  • Insulated trucking: passive protection, fine for short hauls in moderate climates, risky for longer routes or extreme temperatures.
  • Refrigerated (reefer) trucking: active control matching the ocean leg, the right choice when the cargo can't afford a gap.

4. Temperature monitoring: what "tracked" should actually mean

A temperature log you receive after delivery tells you what went wrong, not that it's going wrong. Real monitoring means continuous data with alerts, so a deviation gets caught and corrected mid-transit, not discovered at the destination dock.

5. Questions to ask before booking a cold chain shipment

  • Ask exactly where the handoffs are on your route, and what happens to temperature control at each one.
  • Ask whether monitoring is continuous or spot-checked.
  • Ask what the actual response protocol is if a deviation is detected in transit, not just whether alerts exist.
